Our Latest and Greatest Adventure

Hello again! Rachel Studley here. As you may have guessed from my classmates posts we are no longer in London. We are traveling throughout the South of England to tour Bath and Stratford-upon-Avon.  I definitely think I like these smaller towns better than London. They are much quieter and it's just not in my personality to tolerate such a big city for a long period of time.
Bath was really beautiful. A small city tucked away among the hills in the countryside. Though it gets its game from the Romans the spas here were popular until the 17th century and there is a modern one that still exists today right next to the ancient Roman Baths. People used to travel to Bath because the mineral water from the hot spring was thought to be healing. One of the Audio guide sections said doctors would prescribe their patients to drink up to 5 liters of the water per day! Becca were talking about it once we left and we figured that they probably thought it was healing because peopke at that time in history didn't have much variety in their diets like we do today so probably were healed since they would be deficient in many of those minerals. We actually got to drink the water at the end of our tour though you can't touch it in the actual Bath area because it's really dirty and the original pool was lined with lead. The water we drank was really hot and tasted like iron.

After our tour of Bath we headed to Stratford-upon-Avon which, surprisingly has been my favorite.  I thought it would really touristy and be very up front about the Shakespeare thing but it's very cute and low key about the whole thing. There are references everywhere but you have to kind of look for them. Like when we were wandering around waiting for the show to start we found the bridal shop is called Shakespeare in love. Adorable.

All the shops were unfortunately closed so any shopping we'll have to get up early to do before the bus leaves at 11 am. Becca and I really want to go to the teddy bear store which opens at 10 so thankfully our hotel isn't too far away. Our last stop in Stratford-upon-Avon is to tour Anne Hathaway's cottage; not current Anne Hathaway, Shakespeare's wife Anne Hathaway (there was some confusion about this on the bus haha). Then we return to London for the last few days of trying to squeze in as many adventures as possible before heading home on Sunday.

Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoy following the rest of our trip!
Rachel

  1. I really enjoyed not only your insight into the Baths, but also spending most of the tour with you and Luc. Together we made a wonderfully fun trio as we explored the water world wonder and how many goers thought the waters were a gift from Sulis Minerva. Plus, seeing the Gorgon face was fascinating as it's stony gaze brought stiff chills to all who stared at his carved face. Shakespeare Land, (Stratford Upon Avon), was also a sight to behold. Can't wait to see what else the week has in store!

  2. Rachel,
I completely agree with you about a nice getaway from London; I had forgotten how wonderful fresh air is! Bath was surprisingly very uniform in the light kaki colors and styles of the buildings which I wasn't expecting. The towns we passed through on the way to Bath and Stratford seemed as if they were plucked out of a fairy tale. The old brick and thatched roofs are so beautiful and timeless. It's definitely my dream house! I cannot believe the buildings in Stratford were from the fifteenth century and are still standing, it's difficult to imagine something standing the test of time so well. I was sad to leave those beautiful towns, but I'm happy we are back to our temporary London home.
